Breaking down the walls of traditional galleries for a truly immersive art experience, nothing compares to mingling with some of the world's best contemporary artists in the fresh late-summer air. Since 1961, no celebration of art in Toronto has influenced the festival scene quite like this one. Totally FREE and open to everyone, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition (TOAE) brings cutting-edge curated work from up to 500 international artists to an audience of 100,000+ in Downtown's public forum of Nathan Phillips Square, just 5 minutes from our hotel.
Canada's Longest-Running Outdoor Art Show
As far as art goes, if you can imagine it, you'll find it at TOAE. Compelling installations, paintings, prints, photography, mixed media, sculpture, jewelry, glass, woodwork, and ceramics are just a few of the 14 creative categories to peruse and purchase from if you fall in love. There's even an Awards Parade at 1pm on Saturday, as winners are announced in a colorful procession led by musicians throughout the Square.
Art Now Avenue
The wild heart and most interactive aspect of TOAE is Art Now, a multi-artist space united by this year's theme of "Expectations." Artists specially chosen to participate will engage audiences with hands-on, in-your-face exhibits like a ping pong ball game of chance, cardboard-box sculptures, human clocks, and never-ending speeches. No matter when you visit, it's easily the most exciting area of the festival.
